Expanded Bridge Center for Youth opens

The Bridge Center for Youth is hosting a community barbeque June 5 to commemorate the grand opening of their newly expanded center for homeless and runaway youth at 22nd & Emerson.

The new center is a 24,000-square-foot facility that houses an 18-bed transitional living center for youth, ages 16–21, and a variety of supportive services for youth experiencing homelessness, including counseling, career development services, and on-site health assessments, among other things.

The new building, located across the street from The Bridge’s emergency shelter, doubles The Bridge’s capacity to serve youth.

Tim Reardon, the organization’s new
executive director, said he’s appreciative of all of the community support The Bridge has received over the years.

“The new center is symbolic of a whole new era for the organization, and we have been committed to serving the needs of homeless and runaway teens since our inception over 38 years ago,” Reardon said. “This demonstrates a commitment on part of the organization, the board to expand and further deepen our efforts. It will allow us to solidify the services we’ve been
providing to homeless youth, which is a growing problem”

The opening of the new Bridge Center for Youth is the culmination of a major capital campaign for the organization that started in 2004. To date, the organization has raised $6.5 million of its
$7.8 million goal.

The Bridge for Youth — formerly known as The Bridge for Runaway Youth — has been in the East Isles neighborhood for nearly four decades, and serves more than a 1,000 youth and their families each year. It is the longest running agency serving runaway and homeless youth in the state.

The community barbecue will be held 4–7 p.m. and will feature food from several neighborhood businesses, music and a brief program at 5:30 p.m.

Reardon said it will be a “festive” event for the neighborhood, which he said has been very supportive of The Bridge over the years.

“It is our chance to show our gratitude to the hundreds of people who have contributed to making this building possible,” he said. “We are so grateful for their support.”
