School choice meeting set for Kingfield and East Harriet residents

UPDATED March 18, 2009, 2:19pm

Conversation on future of open areas planned

EAST HARRIET — Minneapolis Public Schools families who live in East Harriet and Kingfield are invited to a conversation on proposed changes to their school enrollment options 7 p.m.–9 p.m. Monday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 4100 Lyndale Ave. S.

Jackie Turner, the head of Minneapolis Public Schools Student Placement Services, will be on hand to discuss potential changes to the F2 Open Area, an open-enrollment area for those two neighborhoods. Changes to the elementary school choice system could alter or eliminate open enrollment areas by fall 2010.

The School Board is expected to vote on those changes May 12.

The Kingfield Neighborhood Association [KFNA] will host the meeting. Seating is limited to 200 people, so attendees are advised to show up early.

For additional information on meeting and the district’s proposed changes, visit the KFNA website. Families in the two neighborhoods also have started an online discussion group at www.openarea.ning.com.

For an outline of the proposed changes, read “The Cost of Choice” in the March 9 edition of the Southwest Journal.

The Southwest Journal blog has a dispatch from the most recent School Board work session on school choice planning.
