Hardware store helps with flood relief

Settergren Ace Hardware at 54th Street and Penn Avenue teamed up with the Salvation Army in March and early April to organize a flood-relief fundraiser for people along the swollen Red River in northwest Minnesota and eastern North Dakota.

“We just want to help them out,” said storeowner and manager Mark Settergren, who was planning to join the sandbagging effort, but couldn’t free up enough time to leave the store.

Donations were put toward tools requested by the Salvation Army — things like shovels, rakes, bags, buckets, mops and more. Individual donations ranged from $20 to $100, Settergren said. The fundraiser ended April 3.

Mt. Fuji comes to Uptown

Maple Grove sushi and Asian cuisine restaurant Mt. Fuji opened a new branch March 31 in Uptown. The restaurant, at 2819 Hennepin Ave., will be open for lunch, dinner and late-night meals from noon-midnight on weekdays and noon–2 a.m. on weekends.

Featuring French style sushi, hibachi entrées, seafood and other traditional Asian cuisine, entrée prices range from $12.95 to $25.95. Sushi and sashimi rolls range from $4 to about $10. Appetizers and entrées include soups, stir-fried seafood, eel, tuna, salmon and shrimp sushi rolls and Asian noodles and rice.

Mt. Fuji offers a bar and take-out or delivery services, and also gives diners the option to watch the chef prepare their meals in the restaurant right in front of them.

During Mt. Fuji’s happy hours, visitors can enjoy appetizers and sushi rolls for under $5. Happy hours are 4:30 p.m.–6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.–close Monday–Thursday, and 8 p.m.–close on Sundays.

Savoy Pizza to replace Golooney’s

Golooney’s East Coast Pizza at 2329 Hennepin Ave. served its last thin-crust slice in March and will be replaced this spring with a Red’s Savoy Pizza.

Savoy is also a no-frills thin-crust pizza joint. It’s a staple in downtown St. Paul, where it’s been family-run since 1965. Savoy also has restaurants in east St. Paul and Newport, Minn.

Remodeling is underway at the corner space in Uptown and Savoy expects it to open May 1, according to a blog the company started to keep pizza fans up to speed on progress at the site. Check it out at www.savoyuptown.com.

Café Cuba is coming soon to the former Betsy’s Back Porch space at Diamond Lake Road and Nicollet Avenue, according to a sign on the building. Betsy’s closed during the winter because of financial troubles.

Tosca, at 44th Street and Beard Avenue in Linden Hills, will open for dinner and start serving wine and beer this month. It’s Turtle Bread founder Harvey McLain’s latest venture and it’s named after an opera.
