The Lake Harriet Band Shell's summer season won't close with the annual Minnesota Orchestra concert. A lack of funding has put the performance by the wayside.

Minnesota Orchestra won’t put on Lake Harriet concert

UPDATED May 12, 2009, 2:48pm

The Minnesota Orchestra again will not close out the Lake Harriet Band Shell summer concert season.

It’s the second year in a row the popular free event will be impacted by the orchestra’s budget. Last summer, the orchestra announced it would be canceled because of a lack of funding. Target Corp. later made a one-time donation to bring it back, although rain ultimately washed it out.

This year is a bit different, orchestra spokeswoman Gwen Pappas said. The concert isn’t canceled — it’s simply not scheduled.

“We went into it knowing we had no sponsors for it,” she said.

It was a purely budget-based decision, Pappas said. The current economic climate has left no known source for covering the event’s cost.

Pappas said it’s theoretically possible another one-time donation could again bring the concert back, but because it’s not even on the orchestra’s schedule right now, it would be more difficult to coordinate. For now, the orchestra awaits a more stable economy.

“It really was a terrific event, and we hope that it someday will return,” Pappas said.
