Goodman again tops in campaign funds

Once again, incumbent City Council Member Lisa Goodman (7th Ward) entered an election year with the largest amount of campaign funds of any municipal candidate in Minneapolis.

She had $99,280 at the end of 2004. She had even more at the end of ’08.

According to finance reports filed with Hennepin County, Goodman finished the year with $105,604.23. That puts her funds at a much, much higher level than any other candidates in the city. By comparison, incumbent Council Member Diane Hofstede (3rd Ward), who had the second-largest amount of funds of any council member at the end of 2008, reported $28,483.25, a more-than $75,000 difference.

In the Southwest Journal’s coverage area, the 8th Ward’s Elizabeth Glidden came in second, with $13,404.26. Meanwhile, Mayor R.T. Rybak reported having $9,199.35 at the end of 2008.

So why so much for Goodman? It didn’t hurt that she had $93,327.11 left over after winning reelection in 2005. However, that doesn’t mean that her campaign hasn’t spent money since that time. Each of the past three years, it’s averaged just above $22,000 in expenditures on such things as postage, event refreshments, a couple of media subscriptions and various other campaign donations.

Meanwhile, non-incumbents overall reported having much smaller campaign funds, which can be attributed to many not deciding to run until this year. Of those who did have finances to report at the end of 2008, 10th Ward Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party-endorsed Meg Tuthill reported the most: $9,469.17.
